9th International Symposium on Gas Transfer at Water Surfaces (GTWS)

Confirmed invited speakers

Dr. Penny Vlahos is a chemical engineer who works on the thermodynamic transfer of target compounds in natural systems. Her research spans the tropics to the poles to understand drivers and feedbacks that can help us identify, respond and adapt to environmental shifts.

Minhan Dai (https://mel2.xmu.edu.cn/faculty/MinhanDai/) is Chair professor at Xiamen University, Honorary Director of the State Key Laboratory of Marine Environmental Science (MEL), and Director of the Fujian Ocean Innovation Center. His primary research interests include ocean carbon & nutrients biogeochemistry, ocean sustainability and policy. He has published >250 peer-reviewed papers in leading international journals and was elected an Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2017. He won the 2022 Axford Medal Award (AOGS) and the 2024 Ambassador Award (AGU).

Mingxi Yang (https://pml.ac.uk/profile/dr-ming-xi-yang/), a principal scientist at the Plymouth Marine Laboratory, has been studying air-sea exchange over the last 20 years. He has applied the eddy covariance method to measure air-sea fluxes of over a dozen gases as well aerosols, heat and momentum from ships and coastal stations. He has further developed novel methods to investigate the physiochemical efficiency of ambient seawater at exchanging gases and taking up ozone.

Marcus Klaus is a physical geographer and Associate Professor at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences https://www.slu.se/en/profilepages/k/marcus-klaus/. His research focuses on aquatic biogeochemistry, hydrology, and hydrodynamics, with an emphasis on carbon cycling and greenhouse gas exchange in lakes, streams, and groundwater. He studies the mechanisms governing gas exchange across scales, particularly the role of bubbles in air–water gas exchange.
